SDGA ORLANDO STUDENTS VISIT THE GOLF CHANNEL

Placement Director for SDGA - Orlando, Alan Flashner, organized a trip for about 35 students to THE GOLF CHANNEL this month. The group toured the newsrooms, edit bays, and different sets before watching a live taping of "Golf Central," THE GOLF CHANNEL's evening golf news program.

After the taping, our students sat down with anchors Vince Cellini and Megan West for a meet-and-greet. It was an amazing opportunity that allowed students an up close and personal look into another aspect of the huge golf industry.

        SDGA Gives Back

Students from SDGA - Phoenix recently volunteered their time and services for a group of disabled athletes. Staff members and students served as caddies and scorers for the Special Olympics recently held at the Vistal Golf Course in Phoenix.

"More than 60 volunteers from our campus participated in the event," says Tim Eberlein, campus director of SDGA - Phoenix. "We work hard at SDGA to support and promote such positive attitudes about giving back, and we couldn't be more proud our students."

At SDGA - Orlando a group of 30 students got a unique opportunity to volunteer for a huge Central Florida event. The Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational, held at Isleworth Country Club in Windemere, FL, brought together some of the nation's best young players from 18 teams from across the U.S. for a 3-day competition. The students got to experience first-hand what it takes to run a large tournament, and not only did they participate in a major golf event, but they got themselves a great resume builder.

        Life After SDGA

Alan Hipps graduated from SDGA - Orlando in December 2006. Since then, he has become a full-time instructor and golf coach with The First Tee of Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee.

Alan also started a website to promote and sell his instruction e-book called Golf Swing Connection. He promises his lessons can not only help golfers hit the ball longer and straighter, but also teach them the golf swing in three easy steps.

"Over the years, I've compiled a vast knowledge about the golf swing, and through that knowledge, I've come up with a way to take proven and solid fundamentals and put them together in a simple, smooth, and powerful motion," Alan says. "I have no doubt that if I'd known and applied this philosophy earlier in my career, you might be seeing me today on the PGA Tour battling Tiger Woods and other great players."

        Career Spotlight: Have you Considered?

SDGA helps students prepare for real-world careers throughout the entire golf industry. Each month we'll feature a new position - some that you may be considering and others you've never even thought of.

Golf Journalist or Photographer

With a career in golf journalism or photography, you can get paid to attend golf events. Golf journalists and photographers cover tournaments and other events, and their work can be syndicated nationwide, depending on the popularity of the event.

People who write intelligently and expertly on golf are in demand, as well as those who know what photographs are important to get and how to get them. If you really know your golf, but you also enjoy writing or photography, this could be a fabulous golf career choice for you.
